Great stuff, thanks for posting these. I like the way you put in the photos from your progression blog too.

Ken,

So excuse a novice sharpener, but all this discussion about natural stones... is this sharpening just the edge of the knife, or more of the surface of the knife as well? Do you have any photos you can put up that show this end result. A before and after would be wonderful if you have it too.

Thanks

Thomas

Ken,

First i have to get a WEPS, currently not scheduled to ship until end of April. I also ordered the ceramic stones, and a full set of Choseras. Where would these "natural stones" fit into the progression, or how would i make use of them?

Thanks

Thomas

Dan,

No problem... I'm new here myself. Glad to see another fan of Carter Cutlery. I'll only have two of his pieces though.

5.7 sun Stainless Fukugozai Wabocho in Blue Super steel

Neck knife 182 Oyako hammer finish white steel, ironwood handle

So lets figure out how to keep em sharp

I have some knives coming from Bladesmith Murray Carter. They are made from either white steel with one of them made from "Blue Super" steel.

Are these sharpened in any special way or still in normal progression? I'm assuming these are blended steel formulations. His work making custom knives is amazing and I don't want to "experiment" on these as one new to knife sharpening.

I'll post some pics as soon as they arrive.

This microscope progression study was great! It was the final piece that drove me to order the WEPS and a full set of Chosera stones.

It looked like amazing things were happening with the metal when the water stones went to work. I probably would have bought Shaptons as well but they aren't mounted to the paddles yet, and as someone new to sharpening I wanted to keep it simple for now.

Thanks agan for posting this.

I wasn't really sure how to put it together myself... i really liked the progression shown with the Chosera stones and would like to work with those from the get go. It wasn't available yet in that configuration so i just got a pro I pkg, ceramics, and a full set of chosera..... there that should cover it.

Now to conceal the credit card bill from the wife:evil:

Wow, great group here i can easily identify with so many of you... Hope to learn lots and make a few new friends.

I'm Thomas (elpasotom), age 43, living in El Paso, TX. Originally from WI, then as an Air Force brat lived everywhere, Korea, Germany, Japan, TX, NM, MI, ME... Ok you get the idea... Lots of great experiences growing up in the north woods of WI, and MI. Hunting, fishing, learning real skills i'm grateful to have today.

stayed adventurous through high school and college... Private pilot, Rescue SCUBA diver, spelunking, anything to et away from studies on the weekend.

Met and married my wife at NM State Univ. did a stint as a police officer where i really developed an interest in knives ( and guns), then worked for GE Capital for several years. now run my own private money management firm ( only 100 clients) since 2006. Now spend summers playing taxi to 4 kids and trying to pass on some outdoor skills to them during the summers as we camp around the US and Canada.

I've never really been comfortable sharpening knives and have really no experience. However, after watching many videos from Clay and others i really feel good about this system i'm about to order. So i hope to meet many more of you on the forum and i'll contribute what i can.
