today i sort of backed into a new set of the curved paddles - long story.
fine/coarse - 400/600's.
.
.
last time i tried, they were out of stock -anyway - i watched clay's video on them, but i need opinions and maybe actual sharpening info. from users.
thanks

Perhaps a frame of reference for comparison? Maybe you've been using them longer than my impression.
i am just trying to speed up the fare process - per you and clay, so i decided to buy a new set of 400/600's and try and use those as my main starter paddles on knives that are not in really bad shape. like i said, i got the 1200/1600 ceramics yesterday - they really seem nice so far.

and sanded down the scales until they were even and revealed the nice wood under all the gunk and grime. Second is a coating of polyurethane with a 4 hour dry time and a 220 wet sanding then a final coat of polyurethane and then hit it with the WE. I call it recycling and giving the old knives a second chance. The farmers market is alright with that. seeing how people make bird bathes out of terracotta planters and such it only seems fair to allow sales of a "recycled" knife. Max I do like the free knife sign and may see if I can get some more sales that way because people always like deals.
I have to brag a bit on this as I get the knives from yard sales and the thrift stores at about .25 each, clean the blades up with some barkeepers helper to make the blades shine again then finish the scales as above and sell them for $8 to $10 each depending on the size of the knife.
all mine were thrift store knives........same price as u paid......i clean all handles with wire wheel -nothing beyound that - average sharpening price is 3.00 bucks - all sharp,.......i used them for pratice when i got my EP and WE sometime back..... i just strop them.

For many months i used blue plastic carry whatsit thing for paddles and alike......bucket for WE.

about 3 weeks ago i bought a hvy. duty plastic suit type case and added WE and all paddles - etc to it - it was OK - heavy, but OK..........last 3 weeks i have gone back to my original set ups - works for me

Max, did you wear out your 400/600 diamonds already or is this just to get a set that is super aggressive for the fair? I had forgotten about wetting the ceramics and thought I was done for the day? Now I feel that twitch coming on again
I am very curious about your new set up and how it works for you? I have found your "fair career" to be entertaining and very informative! please update soon:P
not worn out, but close as are my 100/200 - my 200 paddles are actually more coarse than the 100's - or they seem to be going by the feel and sound, so since clay and curtis recommend starting with the 400/600's that is my new plan. sat. i started with my 200's and went to 600 and then coarse ceramics. with these new 1200/1600's they should be great. i really like the way the blade looks after using them so far- (2 knives - more on wed)...testing and breaking in.

Need a New tip

i got my set of 1200/1600's monday. tried them on two knives today - flaking - some, but not as bad as i was expecting.

boy they do seem to do a great job on getting rid of the scrathces.

now this damp or wet thing interests me - i will give that a test on wed.

i also bought a new set of 400/600's so i can try and speed up the fare work - i have a new gig starting thur.'s - 4 to 8pm.

so my plan is to try and use the new 400/600's and the 1200/1600 ceramics as my main sharpening set up.

i will advise.

once i take the picture and i take all my pics at large pixels above 2500. then i remove the camera card and insert in puter.

i use a photo program called: InFanView - a free downloadable one - been using it for over 12 years.
with infanview i can resize to any size i want and on here, i resize to 700 or 725......i can add captions and whatnot also.....it is just a photo program like many around, just easy to use.

now i have many phone folers on my external hard drive and some in my pictures on my puter. ALL FOLDERS HAVE A NAME............wickededge folder and after makeing all the changes to the picture, i save it to whatever folder i want to WITH A NAME, so when i open that WE folder i will see pictures with names or numbers and i highlight it and hit the open button and it adds to this forum.

with photobucket..........u need the same..........a folder with names to save pictures into, but with photobucket u can load lots of pics on here by copying them automatically from PB.....BUT THEY HAVE TO BE IN A FOLDER OR I THINK THEY CALL THEM ALBUMS.

when u save them initally to your puter to named folder.............once u open PB, u can add from there by just clicking add photos and PB will guide u to your puter where u have the pics saves and then same as many as u want at one time to PB.

put u do not need to use PB unless u want to load several pics on WE at once....more than 1

That Knife is an Ulu a knife originally used by Inuit woman for food prep and scraping skins.

I have a couple of them. Very useful for dicing and chopping vegetables and as a general purpose knife.

i got it from the next vendor over last sat.....and that is all she cuts with it - vegtables.

What are you sharpening the scissors & shears on ? Are you using your Edge pro for that?
It will be good once WE has all the answers; scissors including hairdressing scissors turn out well on the EP(especially with the polishing tapes) although in the interest of portability it will be great when both scissors & serrated knives (bread knives Leatherman etc which I do on a Spyderco Sharpmaker) can all be done on the WE and perhaps axes as well.
I am sure WE will address all of these issues in the not too distant future.

My event license only allows me to render a service, so i am not allowed to sell anything - over the years i have gathered up many knives from here and there......so i give them away and hope i get a sharpening service out of them......in 6 sat's i have sharpened 5 - already sharp, i just strop for few minutes........2 to 3 bucks max. amount
.
scissors - not hard to sharpen by hand - i use EP 600 paddle and end with 800 most of the time.
.
shears - i use cordless drill with sharpening stone (round) - on small ones, i use hand file and 800 paddles - on some larger ones, i have used the 80 and 200 paddles.
.
i use the EP polishing tapes alot on the WE - i just stick to fine side of ceramic paddles and go to town with them - i like the polishing tapes and i really want to get some of those diamond lapping film from lee valley and try some of those also.....they sound pretty nice.

Well the fair started out pretty good today – got two knives right off the bat and then things slowed down, so I took a stroll around the fare. That must have been the trick.
Here come the garden trimmer cutters and knives. – 10 knives for the day and 5 sets of shears of some sort.----all in all a good day and the fare had a great day also.
First 3 knives I did completely with 400/600 and up to coarse ceramics and those, I started using the 200 paddles and then to the 400/600. I was much faster today – thanks everyone for all your help.
Later today or tonight, I will stick that broken tip knife out for comments on the best way to re-shape the tip. I know how I would do it, but at times I am crude and I do not want Curtis to Pause again.

Vid is rather long – 18 mins + today - see you soon – good luck

Looks good.

You might also consider this... if you mark the knife with a marker, and set the stones so that you're reaching the edge, you really don't need to spend the time raising a burr... you can just start sharpening alternating sides. The burr primarily tells you that you've reached the edge, which you already know you're there.

You can just feel the edge before and after you start sharpening and it will tell you if it's changing, or use something like an Edge Tester (if you're not comfortable touching the edge).

This also depends on the condition of the knife... if it's in bad shape, then you may want to raise a burr... but then you'll also probably drop to a more coarse stone.

I don't agree... and to me, that's the point of this thread. The WE is more than capable of sharpening a knife in just a couple of minutes, if you follow the points of how it's done. You can reserve your belt grinder for really major work, or for work that really can't be done on the WE.

There seems to be a tendency, beyond this thread (or even this forum), that WE users feel like (seems like?) they have to take an inordinate amount of time to get a knife sharp, they have to use every stone in their setup, and that every knife has to be hair whittling sharp, with mirror edges, etc.. There's a time and place (and charge if you're headed that direction) for this, but what's being overlooked is the speed capablilites that the WE offers.

Hope that makes sense.

The WE is more than capable of sharpening a knife in just a couple of minutes, if you follow the points of how it's done.....HERE is where i seem to struggle.

i need to be much faster - not looking to polish - knives are as most know - very sharp for consumers past 800/1000 diamonds - on many knives, i stop at 600 and use my ceramics. yesterday i bought some new ones from clay - the 1200/1600 to use after the 600 - many months ago they were out of stock and i ended up with the coarse/fine ones.
.
.
but what's being overlooked is the speed capablilites that the WE offers....I WILL AGREE it does pretty good once i get a burr, but many knives i have encounted, this is a slow step for me - the new 50/80's have helped....(not used 50's yet).
.
.
at the fare, people are just amazed at the WE and the paddles moving up and down and in and out, some just stare and watch and comment........the whole foods inside fathers day gig is attracting many customers already signed up on facebook (WF is limited each to 3 knives) - i am very interested on how the inside thing will be - sounds pretty kewl right now.

stand by for more - see ya
