Tempted to try a Tanto blade but not sure if I should unless I can sharpen it on the WEPS. I'm guessing you just use a sharpie to get the blade placed correctly and sharpen the 2 edges separately? Just concerned about rounding the corner of the tanto...

I also need some magnification one of these days, if anything I'm horribly guilty of overdoing the burr now and then!

Amen brother! Me too!!! I just ordered one of those nifty 60x lighted magnifiers that Clay suggested. Dirt cheap!!!!

How did you set your angle? Did you use a sharpie to make sure that you were sharpening right up to the apex? That's like the most important thing, or else you could spend a LOT of strokes reprofiling the blade and instead of 80 strokes it could take 200 strokes to get all the metal removed to get a burr... By the sounds of it you were removing a lot of metal (wrap your pivot and handle with saran wrap to prevent the shavings from getting in there). Was the knife really that dull to begin with or were you trying to re-profile to a significantly lower angle?

Thanks. I should probably invest in a good magnifier. Any suggestions on magnification level?

Did you send Clay a PM here on the forum? Worked for me!

I'd just like to chime in and say that while I had some of the same communication issues as I've read on here with the e-mails that seem to disappear into a black hole and voice mails left on a machine, I was able to communicate well with Clay through the private messages here on the forum! Also, Clay really went the extra mile in resolving my issue with the F&S and the eventual follow-through was outstanding. So, while I completely understand that they face a great challenge with production efficiency and manpower I have no doubt about their commitment to making sure that we the customers are happy with the product. I don't mind having to wait when I know with 100% assurance that I will be taken care of.

I do use a marker as well as careful set-up measurements to the mm. Should I be feeling a burr at 600 before moving to 800?

I don't need to reprofile or start at 100 grit to sharpen my knife. I want to touch it up a bit. Where do you start for a touch up? 400? 600? Thanks!

Hi Clay,

Any progress on the straight blade video? I am very curious as I have a sheeps foot style blade that has a perfectly straight edge (Kevin Wilkins Parforce). I've been wondering how to sharpen this on the WEPS. Could you clarify what the "two Points" you were referring to on earlier responses on this thread? 2 points along the edge and the spine?

Thanks!

You've GOT to raise a burr all the way along the edge with the 100 before moving on. No matter how long it takes and it could take a while with some of these super steels. Don't move to 200 until you have a burr all the way along the edge.

I sent my F&S back to Clay and I am waiting for the Pro base and arms so I can get back to sharpening!!!!

Thanks for the advice! I spoke to Clay this morning. He was great on the phone and very helpful. He had a couple of suggestions. One was to clamp the knife at the very top of the clamp (which I had tried) and the other suggestion was to let the stones contact the clamp and wear away the coating on the clamp which adds some thickness. Judging from how close the stone gets to the blade edge this might work. He also offered to just let me send in the F&S case, clamp and arms and he'd send me the pro base and arms (I want to keep the stones). I opted for the exchange because even though I like the portability of the F&S I just don't want to have to opt for work-arounds. I'd rather just be able to sharpen as intended. Especially since I am very new to sharpening, etc. Anyway, I am very satisfied with the resolution!

Thanks! No I'm not confused, you have expressed my thinking exactly. I'm glad my thinking is supported by what you do too!!! None of my knives need a mirror polish, they just need to cut like a lazer beam...

Can I strop without using a diamond compound? Why not just strop with bare leather? I bought some Kangaroo strops but no paste as I like a toothy edge...am I messed up in the head? If I were to use just one compound what would you recommend for a toothy edge?

I now own several higher end folders. A 3" XM-18 flipper, a Les George VECP 1.0, Benchmade 806, Benchmade 615, 2 CRK Mnandis and a CRK Large Sebenza. I also have some nice fixed blades now, an Esee Junglas, a SOG Navy Seal.

Welcome!

When you say you got in to better knives you weren't kidding. That's some seriously high end stuff you got there. Nice!

Ken

Thanks Ken! Yeah, I went a little overboard at first! This is actually what remains after I got rid of some knives that I felt I would probably never carry. What remains is a nice variety that I put into rotation for EDC and enjoy for a few days before rotating to another. I really appreciate each one.

Hi,

My name is Phil. I'm 45, have a wife and 3 young kids and I live in the Portland, OR area. I have loved knives all my life starting from a young age. My first knife was a Barlow folder that I got for cub scouts. I am an Eagle Scout and my boys are in scouting so I enjoy getting outdoors and camping/hiking/fishing. I did not really know anything about high end knives until less than a year ago. I bought a Spyderco Endura Clip-it back in 1995 and I thought that was really an expensive knife. I decided to replace it a few months back and thanks to the internet I became exposed to the addiction of knife collection. I wish to be able to keep all of these knives razor sharp on my own. I tried other sharpening systems and was unsuccessful. I am VERY thankful for the WEPS.

Thanks for the welcome! I hope Clay does have a trick up his sleeve. Otherwise I'll just have to return this and go to the pro. I love the portability of the F&S though... I just want to be able to sharpen some of my smaller knives that have much more acute angles. Some of my knives have smaller angles and I don't want to change that. A solution I thought of was some kind of extender that lifts the knife up a couple of inches. That would change the angle but I sharpen using a sharpie more than I do to a specific number. The extender would have to be really stiff though and clamp onto the knife securely....

Hello,
I'm a new WEPS user. Just got the Field and Sport a couple days ago and got a really nice sharp edge on a knife within an hour. Love this thing. I ran into a problem yesterday, however. I tried sharpening a short blade (edge to top, not length) and the stones ran into the angled part of the clamp and could not touch the blade edge. I also tried clamping the blade at the very top edge of the clamp and really making sure it was tight but the stones still cannot make contact at 20 degrees. The F&S version of the WEPS is different from the straight "A" frame design of the pro. There is an angle that sticks out that interferes with the line of the stones at low angles. I have not seen any posts on this anywhere on the forum. Am I doing something wrong? I have a call into Clay but have not spoken to him yet. I love this thing and don't want to return it but I have to be able to sharpen ANY knife with it... Suggestions welcome!
