Re: The 50/80 stones and the s ...
Do you use any magnification to "not tell"?
What level of refinement do you try to attain with your edges... your bevel? Meaning what is the finest grit that you use?
The whole idea of letting people know of your results is framing the answer so that others know what you mean.
There are lots of conversations going on about getting the ultimate edge refinement and a mirror bevel. In general sharpening discussions, these questions migh be irrevelent, In the context of the WEPS, they become critical. I'm sorry for the lack of details. I am new to forums and probably don't have the best writing skills. I read this forum just about every day for tips and would feel a little guilty if I didn't try to contribute something.
I raise a burr with my 50/80 stones then proceed through all the diamond stones 50 to 100 passes per stone the last few passes on each grit with light pressure. The super fine ceramics are next then the micro ceramics. Then I change my angle 2 degrees lower in this case form 17 to 15 then start stropping with the 5/3.5 on leather light strokes then test with my dogs hair (short hair terrier) then back down to 17 degrees for my balsa strops with 1./0.5 diamond spray then back up to 15 degrees for a final strop with o.25/0.125 Cubic boron nitride. I use alcohol spray on all my strops and I have to say maybe a little to much my leather seems to be stiffening up which might not be so bad as far as rounding the edge with the soft leather is a concern for me.I check my edges with a 60x lighted lop like I saw in one of Clays posts. I get the mirror finish and cut dog hair but it's not perfect I'm still learning. The few small scratches i see when I am done I think are contaminates from lapping my ceramics and my leather strops not my 50/80 stones.

Re: The 50/80 stones and the s ...
I have had the 50/80s for a little while now and couldn't be happier. I don't think it takes that much time to get the scratches out. With the WE 100 passes only takes a minute and I find after only 50 passes on each 100 then 200 I can't tell I used the 50/80 stones.

Re: Lapping the Micro-Fine Cer ...
My micros are 1.163 that's with lapping both sides very hard with all the grits but mainly with the 100 grit stones until I didn't see any high spots If I had my 50/80 stones I would have used them that's how hard I worked the 100 stones. I finished with a 14 micron aluminum oxide on glass and I am very happy, even the coarse side feels smother than the 1200/1600 like I think it should I know some people were using the coarse side in a different order but after lapping I like the coarse after the 1600 I did agree before lapping that the coarse felt to rough but it's fine now. thank you for taking the time to measure your stones. you asked if I cleaned my 100# plate since lapping the ceramics? (I haven't)
I was going on how the stone felt when using it.

Re: Lapping the Micro-Fine Cer ...
I used my micros one time and I thought they needed lapping right away. When I started lapping I did it the way clay discribed with my 100 grit first but I hadent cleaned the diamond stone and I am glad I didn't because it showed the high and low spots on the ceramics. It took over an hour to flatten and I did most of the work with the 100 grit stones just to get the high spots out. Now my 100 grit stones are less agresive than my 200 grit stones. I would buy a cheap coars diamond stone to flatten them then work through the rest of your we stones. I would like to see if someone could mic there micro ceramics
before they start so I know how much I sanded off.

Re: Who uses 50 and 80 Ultra/E ...
Great info once again. This forum has made it so much more enjoyable to get through the learning curve. I just wanted to ask some of the people that have the 50/80 stones if they found any irregularity's in the thickness of the stone on the platens one of my 50s is a full 16th out of the platen then the other end of the same stone. I think i saw some one else had a video on you tube with the same problem or is it a problem when starting with such a cores stone? should I call we?

Re: What am I doing wrong with ...
I lapped my micro stones and they do preform much better but if you do lap your stones with your diamond stones make sure you go through all the grits and use every handle the fine ceramic is so hard it broke down the diamonds on the paddles I used and the ones I didn't use feel like they are cutting more steel. On a good note it will break in your diamond stone. I am new to this still and I know there are people with better advice but this what I did. Also my micro stones weren't very flat or not as flat as I liked.I hope this helps you.

Cabinet Maker
I was always frustrated that I could get my shaper and molder knives very sharp but not my kitchen knives. I can't wait till my WEP comes in. When I would sharpen my shaper blades it would make a big difference whether or not or how much I had to sand.
I can appreciate a sharp edge. Matt
