Chosera Stone Use

Thanks Ken! Yes, I do have all of the diamonds and both sets of ceramics. Since this was my first attempt with the Choseras, I thought I would just see for myself how things turned out after the 600 diamonds. Just can't figure out why the left side turned out great and the right side is not.

Thanks again,

Mark
Chosera Stone Use

Hello Everyone,

All, I am looking for some some suggestions/advice on using my new Chosera stones. I have 800/3000 and 5000/10000 Chosera stones. I profiled a knife using the 600 diamonds to a very nice even and smooth bevel (very flat and perfect not considering the scratches) and then proceeded through the Choseras. On the left side, the bevel is great and I am extremely pleased with the results, but the right side has bright and cloudy spots all over the bevel. I went back and flattened the edge with the diamond stones and started over ensuring I was using very light pressure with the 800 Chosera stone and the same thing is happening. I have ensured that the 13 degree edge has been maintained using the angle guage with each stone. Is it possible that the stones already need to be lapped during their first use? Anyone have any suggestions on why this is happening? I realize not seeing the bevel makes things very difficult to diagnose, but I would appreciate any advise you all may be willing to offer based on your experience. I have watched Tom's videos on using the Chosera stones on the WEPS as well as his video on lapping and they are very helpful.

I realize I may just need more experience with using the stones to obtain the appearance I am seeking, but any tips on how to deeply shorten the learning curve on the Chosera stone use would be most appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time!

Tom and Philip thanks for your input and recommendations. Also, thanks again to everywone for your time and recommendations. I ordered an 800/3000 and 5000/10000. I am sure I will like the results and if so, over time I can add additional combination of grits in the stones to fill the gaps.

Thanks you!

All,

I have read through many posts on the forum concerning Chosera Stones and have found some pertinent information as to what I am looking for but if one had a goal of producing a mirror edge while balancing cost of stones with a limitation of purchasing only two sets of Chosera Stones (to reduce costs), what grit stones would you recommend considering I have the PPII and both sets of ceramic stones. Any and all feedback welcome, but would love to hear from Clay, Ken, Philp and Tom and anyone else with experience with the Chosera stones.

Thanks,

Mark

HELP with acute edge ...

Hello,

I have not experienced this, but there some very small hex keys, down to .5mm or so. If the hex key will not work, then my only suggestion is to simply raise the knife up in the vice clamp.

Hello,

I have been using a set of hex keys to adjust the blade height - just put a hex key on top of the height adjustment prongs. Can easily change the height by using different size hex keys. For ease in producing the result in the future, just jot down the size hex key used.

Tom,

Thank you for the clarfication. Care to comment on your experience or pros and cons of each method?
Edge Leading vs Edge ...

Some folks have stated that they helped this situation by grinding off the plastic edges of the stones to be even with the diamond plates. For me, it was not worth the effort for such a small area.

Would someone be so kind and define "Edge Leading" and "Edge Trailing"?

Thanks,

Question

I apologize, but the picture is backwards in the that when on the base, it it actually the right half of the clamp that is not square at the top. In addition, the right side of the clamp is a little taller than the left side and this may be due to the bend - not sure.
Question

cbw34,

Thanks for your reply. I double checked and the clamp and angle arm are perfectly square with the base. However when looking everything over, I noticed that the right side clamp is not square with the left clamp and in fact it is curved backwards. I have been thinking about this and cannot determine if this could be contributing to the issue. I have tried to attach a file that shows what I am talking about, but I am not sure if I was successfule or not.

Thanks,

Mark
Question
emo
Hello Everyone,

I have been having a great time sharpening knives with the WEPS and learning from all of you on this forum but am struggling in one area and am looking for some guidance. It seems that every knife I sharpen the left (with the knife in the clamp) bevel is always a little wider than the right I am using the angle gauge and eye sight to ensure the knife is in the clamp straight left and right, ensuring the angle is the same with all stones and ceramics but not the strops. Is there anything else other than the knife not bring perfectly straight in the clamp that I am overlooking that could be causing this?

Thanks in advance for anu input on this!

An ancillary item that I have found very useful in adjusting the blade height for small blades is a set of small hex keys. For ease in duplicating the setting for future sharpening, just note the specific size hex key used.
