If it were me a would at this point start back over with the 400 diamonds. To raise a burr? Scrub on just one side evenly. Then with a finger nail run it against the blade going towards the edge. When a burr is formed you will feel a small lip along the edge. Make sire that lip goes from heel to tip.
When done with the one side, switch to the other side and repeat. Feeling for the burr on the other side now. When you have a burr from heel to tip stop. Now using the same stones and alternating strokes lightly make around forty to fifty passes. This will remove the burr or also called a wire edge. When you have done this run your nail back up both sides and make sure the lip is gone!
Now start making your passes gong up the grades with at least fifty alternating strokes up to 1000 grit.
You should now be ready to strop? Then knife will be very toothy but sharp.
Have fun!!!

I agree with most of this assessment, however I believe after raising your bur, the additional stokes with the same stones is not needed (IMO). After getting my bur on both sides I proceed to the next higher stone and continue thru the regular progression. My edges come out wickedly sharp. Now since I have not tried the above method I might give it a shot and see if there is any noticeable difference. It just seems to me that you are just taking off metal for no reason.

Sorry but the top section that was inserted did not highlight in blue as I have seen in other posts. I did a regular copy and paste. Can someone explain how to make inserts with them being highlighted?

Hey Clay

Did you ever find out why some of the posts to the knife dated base never posted. Maybe their just floating around somewhere or is it best to repost them? I definitely want to build up some points.

Well it's been 2 weeks since I posted my first knife in the knife data base and have yet to see it. It was mentioned that someone had to approve the entries. If for some reason the entry is not approved will the person be notified as to why it wasn't posted?

Well fella's, I'm having a different problem with checking the hair whittling edge on my knifes. For the past 10 years I have been shaving my head and the wife is getting tired of me sneaking up behind her and snatching a couple of hairs from her head. I'll have to stop that for a while or my arm will be too sore to sharpen any knives. She said she would cut off a few but lets face it, it's just not as fun that way.

Thanks, did not know that. I guess he will see that it was posted twice since I didn't think it went thru the first time.

Need a little help! I jusy sharpened my Kershaw Cryo and thought I would post it in the Knife Data base even though there was already a Cryo listed. I went thru the form and hit the sent block, caption came up and said it was saved but I can not find it anywhere under Kershaw.

Any suggestions?

Hi Jamey. I just recently received my WEPS and had a similar problem. That you used a pair of pliers to tighten the thumb screws I don't know if my answer will help. I noticed my thumb screws were also loosening up and what I found helpful was as I tightend the screws I grabbed the bracket the thumbscrew goes into and wiggled it back and forth and this seemed to let the screw seat tighter. Anyways this helped me.

Stephen,

I too can understand your frustration. I ordered my WEPS the week after I saw it in action at the Las Vegas gun show. I was told I would be about a month before it would ship and I would not be billed until it was shipped. After about two week I made it a point to call at least once a week to check on the shipping status. On the week it was supposed to ship I was told it would be another week. That next week I contacted WE again and was told it would be shipped in 2 days. The evening of the second day I received conformation that it had been shipped. This was a Wednesday, I recieved the WEPS the following week on Friday. As others have stated and I agree, the wait is more than worth it.

I don't know the internal workings of their business but I am sure they are not slow to respond just because they are just sitting around. I also never got a response when contacting them via e-mail, however I had excellent results by calling. I almost always talked to someone (Kay or I believe his name was Tom). They were very polite and always had an answer within a minute or two, maybe not what I wanted to hear (as far as shipping time was concerned) but always had an answer.

If you call them do it before 3:00 their time. Between 3:00 and 5:00 they are in their shipping department getting orders ready to be shipped out and usually do not answer the phone.

If you call before 3:00 and get the answering don as I did. I just hung up, waited a few minutes and called again. I never had to call more than three times before someone answered. Maybe they were away from the phone or on the other line but I was always able to get someon to answer the phone.

I have always had a business for the past thirty years but The one thing I do not understand is why there is always a delay (back ordered items). It seem that their business is growing by leaps and bounds and I would think they would order 2-3 more times more product so they could handle the amount of business they have calls for. Then again I do not have knowledge of their internal structure.

Hopes this helps.

Yea I know what you mean. Usually doing something like cutting my finger the way I did will differently keep me on guard when sharpening.

Hey craig

Thought the thumb would feel a lot worse than it does, so not complaining to much.

Know what you mean about the strops. I have quit a few BIG nicks in mine. I was trying to stroke to fast with not enough experience. I think they will still work OK or at least I hope so. The day before yesterday I ordered the 1200-1600 ceramics. I was really surprized how sharp the knives got with 5 1nd 3.5 paste. I even had a little mirrow finish and hope to have a better finish with the ceramics.

Well, there were a few things I did not get to discuss.

1. I tried to just sharpen the factory edge using the sharpie but I had to reprofile both knifes which actually was a good thing. One at 30* each side the other at 27* , these were as close to the factory bevel as I could get.

2. And for you newbies (pay attention) this one hurts. While doing the 1k stones on the second knife I guess I was getting a little to comfortable because on one of my heel to tip sweeping motions as I passed the tip I failed to rotate my hand out to the right and brought my hand straight back. The tip of the knife entered my thumb next to the nail, proceeded thru the side of the thumb and laid it open like spliting a chicken breast. Being persistant (after first aid) I still finished the knife. It was a bad cut but not as bad as you would think.

3. I will be letting my thumb rest tonight.

Oh, so much to tell but I will try to make it short. Got my PP1 yesterday morning and with assembly only having to attach the base and arms I was ready to start sharpening. Well not so lucky as the shop started to get busy about then and stayed busy all day. Just before lunch I had a customer inquired about the WEPS that was sitting on the counter. I explained what it was and that I just received it. Out of the blue he asked if I would sharpen two of his knives and I explained that I had not even used it yet but he said "I have faith thay you can do it", and i'm thinking well you have more than me. We came to an agreement on the price and I told him to give me a couple of days. Now, these 2 knives are cheap chinese made surival knives, one blade is 8 1/2 in. and the other 11 in. But what the heck, I've got to start somewhere I just didn't think this is where it was going to be. Well that night I got everything layed out and started sharpening. It took a littlt while to get into the rhythm but things progressed rather smoothly. With the first knife I went thru my diamond stones (100-1k) after getting my burr on both sides. After the burr I completed 50 strokes per side for the 200,400,600 and 100 strokes per side for the 800 and 1000. Then 100 strokes per side with the 5 and 3.5 micron paste. (Running out of space) Knife cut paper like hot butter. second knife went as well. could not believe it. the WEPS is one great system. There's more I didn't get to tell but you get the jist.

Thanks again Phil. I watched the second post but was unable to access the first. Then error advised me to contact the system administrator.

There was a load of good information in the second post which cleared up some things for me.

Thanks Phil. I guess the best way to understand the intracasies (not sure I spelled that right) of knife sharpening, other than reading this forum (which is awesome) is to do some experimenting with different stones, ceramics and pastes in different combinations to see what results I prefer. I get the jist of what you were saying, just trying to reduce as many trial and errors as possible.

WE just sent me an e-mail letting me know that my PP1 was mailed out yesterday so I should receive it around Monday and that is when the fun starts. I doubt I will ever have 50 years experience under my belt as that would put me well over 100 but I'll have fun trying to get there. You and many others on this forum seem to have extensive knowledge about sharpening so I'll most likely be picking a few brains.

Thanks again for the information.

Ok guys, a lot has been thown out in this thread. What I am wondering is since the 5 and 3.5 diamond paste are ( 5 and 3.5 are microns) and the 1200 and 1600 ceramics are ( 5 and 2.85 microns) won't you get about the same finish by using either the ceramic stones or the paste as far as a mirror finish goes?
