Was wishing for the 411 with cabinet, glad I got this one instead. The height is perfect for my position on multiple locations, the kitchen counter, the dining room table, and even my TV tray sitting in the living room.
I went to the local pawn shop and grabbed all the knives that I could budge. These were great for breaking in the stones, plus I will make profit reselling them with razor edges.
YouTube was my best friend when learning how to use the system. There are many different stoke styles and setup variations. My best success came from trying to feel the burr on each progression in stones. It is NOT necessary to begin with coarse stones, the setup and angle selection is the most important step. Also premium steels will suffer from coarse stones, try to get the perfect angle, and find the sweet-spot in the clamp which will give you the same blade/bevel angle for the entire length of the blade. Re-profiling angles can be avoided with proper setup techniques.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with my results. After sharpening many junk knives and properly breaking in the stones, I moved into more valuable lockblade knives. They all shave and are scary sharp. My confidence level grew and I actually decided to try sharpening my new and expensive Microtech LUDT Gen 3 knife, it was already shaving and razor sharp. I matched the factory 24.7 degree angle on both sides. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could improve the edge, but I did. I put that blade against my arm hair, and shaved smoothly a 6 inch stretch on a single pass. The sharpest blade I've ever seen. Idon't even have the high end polishing kit, wish I had it, I will purchase it in the near future.
I don't know if anybody will read this who is considering this purchase, if you are on the fence, I vote that you buy it and you will have razorblade knives for the rest of your life. Not to mention that will be the family hero. Make a few dollars on the side. It's extremely relaxing and as a disabled Veteran, I find a great deal of satisfaction and relaxation gained from each new session.
