I have been using the WE100 for a number of years. It provides exceptional sharpening. I recently purchased a WE60 for my son. It operates quite differently, but once I was accustomed to the new design I liked it very much. The big improvement over the WE100 is setting the bevel angle.
I decided to treat myself and invest in the WE64, with the new bevel angle feature and best of all the double cam locking vice mechanism.
On the WE64, I great appreciate the bevel angle feature, but the double cam locking vice has been a disappointment.
- It does not hold the blame securely and at times the blade tip droops down
- For any bevel angle less than 16 degrees the sharpening stones and especially the leather strops impact the vice
- Unlike the WE100 and the WE60 the WE64 vice does not have any depth guides to help properly align the correct depth for mounting the blade. This is especially apparent and cumbersome in trying to mount thin pocket knives or smaller kitchen paring knives that need to be mounted near the top of the vice.
I decided to keep the WE64 despite these flaws and my disappointment. Based on improvements from the WE100 to the WE60, I am certain the WE64 vice will be redesigned to make it a more functional and useful tool. I just happened to purchase mine in its current configuration.
As a side note, I was very surprised and disappointed in the way my son’s WE60 and my WE64 were packaged. They only came with a pair of 200/600 stones. Long ago when I purchased my WE100 it came with a full set of stones as well leather strops with 3.5/5 paste. As you well know, you can’t do an adequate sharpening job with only 200/600 stones. The real secret lies in the leather strops. Ask any old time barber. I realize you offer a pro pack with added 800/1000 stones along with leather strops, but for the first time users, like my son, they don’t know. My son was very frustrated and disappointed with his first attempts to use his WE60. I helped by showing him lessons learned from years of using the WE100 and I supplied the 800/1000 stones he needed along with the leather strops and paste
BOTTOM LINE: Stop selling the WE60 and WE64 with just the 200/600 stones. Put out the complete package.
You know this is the correct thing to do. You are damaging your reputation with new users.
