How to Create a Micro-Bevel

How to Create a Micro-Bevel

A micro-bevel is a small, secondary (or even tertiary) bevel located right at the edge of your blade. It's commonly used when you want the main bevel to maintain a refined finish—such as a mirror polish—but still need a toothy, high-performance edge for cutting tasks.

Why Use a Micro-Bevel?

Micro-bevels offer a blend of performance and convenience:

  • Faster touch-ups: You can quickly refresh a dull blade without redoing the full bevel.
  • Working edge with polish: Keep the bulk of the bevel polished while adding micro-serrations for cutting power.
  • Versatility: Useful on blades with changing angles or irregular geometry.

Step-by-Step: How to Add a Micro-Bevel

  1. Start by sharpening your knife normally using your Wicked Edge system.
Find your angle and sweet spot, and finish with your desired grit progression.
  2. Once your edge is fully sharpened and finished, increase your angle by 4–5 degrees on both sides.
  3. Switch to a coarser grit stone—typically 600 or 800 grit is ideal.
  4. Perform about 5 light strokes per side to form the micro-bevel.

Quick Edge Touch-Ups with Micro-Bevels

In situations where you don’t have time for a full resharpening—especially on blades with complex edge geometry—you can simply:

  • Kick the angle out 4–5 degrees.
  • Apply a micro-bevel with your preferred grit.

This gives you a fast-working edge now, while preserving the option to go back later and fully reprofile the blade.
